As a disabled surgeon and accidental mystic in crisis, I found wellness by weaving biological science into spiritual practice.

The stage was set when spinal pain and mood instability dogged me after a harsh upbringing. As I entered midlife, the spine problems worsened until they ended my surgical career. Intense mood swings followed, then evolved into powerful visionary states.

The visions assigned a daunting task: merge science and religion. They also shattered my worldview, transforming me from atheist toā€¦something else. Faith in visionary messages would have been untenable before, but now it felt imperative.

Yet when the mystical ecstasy faded after a few months, I wondered if thereā€™d been a mistake: I seemed an ill-suited for the task. I faltered often and gave up for long stretches. But always the sense of mission returned untilā€”ten years laterā€”a chance opportunity led me to begin teaching classes that interwove biology and spirituality.

As Mindful Biology grew into being, it helped me embrace difficulties (past, present, and potential) with ease and heart. Having seen it benefit myself and others, I suspect it could help the culture at large. The sense of calling remains.

Mindful Biology is an expression of my lived experience andā€”I believeā€”Life itself.
